Birmingham City University, Data Analyst and Consultant


Commissioned initially by the former Vice-Chancellor Professor David Tidmarsh, Paul has undertaken a number of projects for Birmingham City University (BCU) to collate and analyse complex data and information, providing competitive analysis and future market positioning recommendations.


The launch of the Key Information Set (KIS) prompted BCU to assess its competitive position against a range of performance data in the Autumn of 2012, including course portfolio range, entry criteria, fee levels, financial incentives, student satisfaction and employability performance. Having organised and analysed a vast amount of data, Paul pulled out key findings and made a number of significant market recommendations, which resulted in changes to a number of course titles and entry criteria.


A second project, which culminated in December 2013, examined the University's home feeder pipeline, collating, analysing UCAS acceptance trends for the University and its competitors at key feeder institutions. Paul provided a comprehensive, fully searchable Excel database, as well as recommendations on potential education partnerships and feeders to target based on entry criteria and past recruitment trends. His research demonstrated the University was not taking advantage of a number of existing and potential feeders at a subject and institutional level; the University has since embarked on a new education partnerships strategy.


Education Marketing Solutions, Data Analyst and Consultant

The introduction of higher fees at undergraduate level in the home student recruitment market led to Paul's collaboration with established consultancy Education Marketing Solutions to develop the Tuition Fee Index (TFI).


The project involved the assembly and analysis of huge amounts of data on institutional fees and financial incentives and transferring this to a fully searchable, VB-formatted Excel database to enable universities to undertake competitor benchmarking and develop future pricing and financial support recommendations.
